Pregnancy Support and Birth Preparation

You deserve support through pregnancy, labour and postpartum. Whether this is your first pregnancy or you’re a seasoned pro, pelvic physiotherapy can help you feel prepared, confident and ready for this next life changing step.

How I Can Help During Pregnancy

At Base Pelvic Health, I support pregnant patients with:

  • Pelvic girdle pain and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD)

  • Low back and hip pain during pregnancy

  • Urinary leakage or urgency

  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation) assessment and guidance

  • Safe exercise guidance throughout pregnancy

  • Birth preparation, including perineal massage education and pushing techniques

  • Labour positioning and breath strategies

Why See a Pelvic Physio During Pregnancy?

Many people wait until after delivery to see a pelvic physiotherapist, but starting during pregnancy has real advantages. Addressing urinary leakage early can reduce symptoms as pregnancy progresses and carry those gains into the postpartum period.

Birth preparation with a pelvic physiotherapist goes beyond exercises. It gives you a genuine understanding of how your pelvic floor works during labour, what positions are available to you, how to manage pain, and how to push effectively, so that regardless of how your birth unfolds, you feel informed, empowered, and confident that you did everything you could to prepare.

Pelvic physiotherapy during pregnancy is safe, gentle, and adapted to wherever you are in your pregnancy. I work with patients at any stage - first trimester through to the final weeks.

Birth Preparation

Birth preparation isn't about following a script, it's about helping you feel confident, knowledgeable, and ready to advocate for yourself no matter how your birth unfolds. Whether you're planning a vaginal delivery, a C-section, or simply don't know yet, the goal is the same: that you go into birth with a real understanding of what's coming physically, and strategies that make you feel empowered rather than caught off guard.

Birth preparation sessions at Base Pelvic Health cover:

  • Labour positioning and movement options

  • Pain management strategies

  • How your support person can help during labour

  • Things that may be helpful to have at your birth

  • Perineal massage technique and guidance

  • Early postpartum exercise and mobility options

  • What to expect in the early postpartum days

Frequently Asked Questions About Pelvic Physiotherapy During Pregnancy

  • Yes! Pelvic physiotherapy is safe at every stage of pregnancy, from the first trimester through to the final weeks. Typically internal exams are reserved for the second trimester and beyond. Treatment is always adapted to your stage of pregnancy and comfort level. If you have any specific concerns or pregnancy complications, I’m happy to liaise with your care team.

  • There's no wrong time. Some patients come in the first trimester for pelvic floor education and exercise guidance. Others come in the second trimester for pelvic girdle pain or urinary symptoms. Many come in the third trimester specifically for birth preparation. If you wait until your 3rd trimester I typically advise patients come in around 32 weeks to allow time for us to review pelvic floor muscle training as well as labour and birth preparation. If you're experiencing symptoms at any stage, earlier is always better — but it's never too late to start.

  • Absolutely! Birth preparation at Base Pelvic Health is designed for every type of delivery. Understanding what to expect physically during and after a C-section, how to protect your pelvic floor in the early postpartum period, and how to support your recovery are just as valuable when you're planning a C-section birth.

  • Yes! Pelvic physiotherapy during pregnancy isn't only for people who are having symptoms. Proactive pelvic floor care, birth preparation, and understanding what to expect postpartum have real benefits even when you feel well. Think of it as intentional preparation for one of your body's biggest physical events.
